ABOUT OUR CLUB

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club was formed in September 2016 by current Chairman ‘Nigel Haynes’ and Club Coaches ‘Di Burdett’ & ‘Brent Horobin’ all of whom have a wealth of coaching and playing experience within Leicestershire tennis. Following negotiations the club reached an agreement with Melton Borough Council & Everyone Active which would allow for the club to commence tennis activities on the 4 number council owned floodlit, tarmac courts based at its present address at Melton Sports Village, Burton Road, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, just off the (A606).

The clubs initial task was to find local sponsors and raise funds in order to have the neglected tarmac tennis courts power washed and re-painted. The club appointed a specialist local company ‘Premier Line Markings’ to undertake the re-painting and line marking works which has greatly enhanced the appearance of the playing surface. New nets, score boards and windbreaks were installed enabling the club to meet the standards required and enter teams in the LTA Leicestershire county doubles league.

The club is very proud with the progress made in its first season having won a men’s AEGON league title and 10 doubles league promotions as outright winners. Another highlight of the clubs first season was wining the prestigious mixed team Mercury Sports Cup overcoming many long established Leicestershire teams.

The management committee are fully committed to further improving facilities at the club and are currently in the process of building a timber clad tennis pavilion adjacent to one end of the tennis courts. Following this improvement the club is also working towards a resurfacing scheme for the 4 existing tarmac courts. The tennis club is also constantly looking to improve its programme of activities and have recently commenced a disability coaching programme with the neighbouring Birchwood Special School and the I-Play 30 scheme which targets tennis activity sessions designed for adults and children with learning, sensory and physical disabilities. The club is pleased to be able to offer social tennis opportunities and team tennis for the local community with the aim being to put this club at the forefront of Leicestershire tennis.

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club wishes to make special thanks to Helen Roper (Schools Programme funding), Nigel Haynes, Brent Horobin, Di Burdett, John Sturmey, Justin Horobin, Carol Gilchrist, Bridget and Neil Ingle, Paul & Michelle Heaton all of whom have made financial donations in support of MMTC.

Further thanks to Tony and Jack Griffin for ground works carried out in preparation for the new clubhouse and Matt Wade for his support in supplying advertising banners.
